HARRISBURG – In a show of solidarity with Wisconsin workers, the president of the association that represents over 6,000 faculty and coaches at the 14 state-owned universities today condemned the anti-union measure now working its way through the Wisconsin state legislature.
The legislation currently being considered by the Wisconsin Senate, and supported by the Governor, strips public-sector employees of their fundamental rights to organize and to bargain on overtime and salary schedules, pensions, and health insurance.
”We stand in solidarity with our University colleagues, public school teachers, and all state employees as they work to defeat this draconian legislation,” commented Steve Hicks, President of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, “APSCUF strongly supports the rights of all public and private sector employees and their fundamental right to collectively bargain.”
Rallies have been ongoing in Wisconsin, and this week various groups are organizing shows of support in several states. Hicks encouraged Pennsylvania’s university and college faculty to attend one of the rallies planned for later this week in Scranton (February 23rd) and in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (February 24th) to show solidarity for all Wisconsin public employees.
