Today AAUP President Rudy Fichtenbaum put out a call for all faculty to sign a national petition advocating for a moratorium on the adoption of a CUNY program called Pathways. CUNY faculty have been fighting the implementation of the program, which would impact general education requirements.
As this piece from the Professional Staff Congress (the union that represents CUNY faculty and professional staff) newsletter discusses, Pathways is a plan, originated in name and idea by the Lumina Foundation, that is supposed to boost college completion – a noble goal. However, it does so by watering down general education requirements and eventually narrowing the options and opportunities (and pedagogical choices) for students.
Let’s support our union colleagues at CUNY by signing the petition and saying “STOP this pathway to destroying quality public higher education!”
