Today the Board of Governors for the State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) selected Frank Brogan to be the next chancellor of the system that oversees the 14 state-owned universities. The vote was unanimous.

Steve Hicks, president of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), said that he looks forward to working with Brogan, a former Lieutenant Governor and current chancellor of the State University System of Florida.

“Mr. Brogan has experience in both academia and state government, qualifications that will benefit the State System. Being chancellor is not unlike being the CEO of a hospital; it requires experience in the field to be an effective administrator,” Hicks stated. “The chancellor is the face of public higher education in the Commonwealth, and we are pleased that the board has selected someone with institutional knowledge of higher education.”

Hicks met with the three candidates for the job on Wednesday, July 24. He signed a confidentiality agreement to not disclose any information about the search or the finalists.

“We are seeing disturbing trends in higher education at both the state and national levels, and we need a strong, credible leader who will promote quality public higher education,” Hicks noted. “We hope Mr. Brogan will provide leadership that advocates for traditional residential, liberal arts education that is enhanced by online education and professional programs and convinces people that public higher education in Pennsylvania is worth investing in. ”

Brogan’s term begins on October 1, 2013.

“I hope that Mr. Brogan will be a strong advocate for the State System and our 115,000 students,” Hicks said. “I look forward to working with him to ensure that our universities continue to provide an affordable, high quality education to the students of the Commonwealth.”
